NOUJIMA Seiji

Seiji Noujima (1941-) Sculptor. Born in Tokyo. Currently lives in Mito. Studied under Kunio Komori. In 1962, his first exhibit at 5th “Nitten” with “Female Neck.” In 1964, graduated from Art Major, Faculty of Educational Studies, Ibaraki University. Past awards include the Special Selection at 1st “Nitten” after reorganization with “Kyu” in 1969. In 1971, the Special Selection at “3rd Exhibit” with “Sho.” In 1990, the Nitten Members’ Award at 22nd “Nitten” with “Lady in May.” In 2000, the Minister of Education Award at 32nd “Nitten” with “Eternal Time.” In 2002, Ibaraki Prefecture Art and Culture Distinguished Service Award. In 2004, received the 61st Japan Art Academy Award. In 2007, lauded as Ibaraki Prefecture’s Special Distinguished Person. In 2008, received the Mito City Cultural Honorary Award. Past positions include 10th Nitten review committee member in 1978 (and 10 times afterwards). In 1981, 11th Nicchoten review committee member (and 10 times afterwards). In 1983, operation committee member for Japan Sculptors Association (Committee Chair in 2000, Chairperson in 2010). In 1994, Nitten council member (Director in 2005, Executive Director in 2007). In 1998, Director of Ibaraki Prefecture Art Exhibit (to present). In 2006, became a member of the Japan Art Academy (to present). In 2007, an Executive Director of Nitten. Using young and healthy female models as a medium, he creates vigorously with honesty. His works are in a unique style, in which he attempts to express the deep exploration of human interiority, with realism as a basis. His personal exhibits have been held countless times, including Tokyo (Takashimaya, Mitsukoshi), Osaka (Takashimaya), Nagoya (Matsuzakaya), Sendai (Mitsukoshi) and Mito (Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, Art Tower Mito).
