SAITOU Haku’un (1949-) calligrapher, action painter. Born in Osaka Prefecture. Real name: Suzuko. Graduate of Bukkyo University in Kyoto. First generation student of the Takarazuka Calligraphy Vocational School. Went on to publish a work for the Toyoshogei’in examination which led to her receiving an exemption of examination as an artist for the Japan Calligraphy Museum and becoming a member artist of the A.M.S.C. Spain Headquarters. Received the Maurice Genevoix Prize for her work, “Grief” at the Monaco-Japan Art Festival in Monte Carlo in 2007. Received the Kensuke Tsukuda Grand Prize at the 2008 AIDS Charity Art Exhibition for her work, “Sage”. Received the Prix Odeon Award at the OASIS Franco-Japanese Cultural Exchange 150th Anniversary for her work, “Excellence”. Received the Juran Matsuda Medal of Arts for her work, “Resent”. Received the OASIS Vietnam Fine Arts Peace Prize for her work, “Harmonious”. In recent years she presented a work at the Art Gent International Art Fair in Belgium, and in 2016 she received first prize for Most Outstanding Calligrapher at the 2016 Hikari Exhibition in Sendai. She is known for her carefree and independent style that displays the disposition Osakans are well known for.
