SATO Zenyu

Satou Zenyuu (1941-), western-style painter. Born in Aomori Prefecture, now living in Tokyo. He started his journey as a professional artist in 1961, when, after graduating high school, he held a personal exhibition at a department store in the city. Moved to Tokyo in 1963 and frequented the art research center whilst working. Studied sketching under sculptor Satou Chuuryou. On the road to learn art, he stayed in a workers' cabin in Fukuoka for three months focusing on figure drawing. That same year, he exhibited works in the Société des Artistes Indépendants Japan Exhibition. In 1976, he exhibited work in the Shutai Exhibition. Enchanted by Otaru's cityscape and canal, he visited Otaru annually and created many works based on the city. Received honorable mention awards consecutively from 1977 to 1979 for his Otaru works and made a member in 1979. Traveled around Europe from 1993 to 2002 to continue sketching. Important works: "Florentine View", "Reminiscence" (from sketching trip in Europe), "Lisbon Morning", the "Venice" series, the "Winter Canals in Otaru" series, "Otaru in Spring", "Winter Town (Otaru)", etc. Has a collection held at the Otaru Art Gallery. Published art books: "Otaru" and "The Satou Zenyuu Collection". Member of the Shutai Art Society and the Japan Art Association.
